Pokémon names

So there’s a lot of confusion about pokemon character name tags.  After consulting Miss Cleo, the horoscopes (the new ones), and our resident pokénerd, we’ve decided on the names in the picture.

Isn’t Ash Ketchum Red…just as Gary Oak is Blue…disregarding the hat appearance…

Bah. I’d asked two months ago or so for permission to help standardize the tag names, then IRL shit came up and I forgot. Glad to see it’s being announced and done; one of my worries was tag edits being undone because people didn’t know why they were being changed. I’ll help out when I can, if the mods still want me/us to.

Can’t say I really give a damn about Pokemon, but yay for standardization!

    anon – no

WBMAN – We’ll jump off that bridge when we get there. We can use aliases to make changes

Bill – Apparently he has multiple names depending on how new or old you are to the whole thing (some say it’s Jimmy/Gold, others say it’s Ethan/Gold). Gold is the name they share in common, so we went with it.

Thank god for the Leaf tag. It was getting pretty confusing to see both Green (Female in USA, Male in Japan) and Blue (Male in USA, Female in Japan) under the same tags because of the name exchange during translation.

  13. Colin said,

The pic shown is not Bianca, it’s Bel.

  14. Someonestatingsomething said,

    Uh….

Isn’t Bianca already the name of ANOTHER Pokemon character…..?

Won’t that cause a bit of confusion?

  15. Genjar said,

    January 21, 2011 @ 10:29 pm

@anon – Hell no. Red/Blue/Gold et cetera are from the manga Pokemon Adventures. Some of them look similar, but for most part they’re completely different characters.

So stop ‘fixing’ those tags already, Ash isn’t Red and so on.

I just wanna say… a-fucking-men. I praise this change. This isn’t Japan, call the characters what we know them by in the anime and video games. Good work, guys.

    And what about Crystal/Cristal/Marina?

  18. qsert said,

Derp, never mind. Didn’t see her up there.

  19. Blue said,

    January 22, 2011 @ 8:05 am

There is a MASSIVE difference between Blue and Gary. If you’re going to make the distinction between Red and Ash Ketchum (which I’m glad you did), you should distinguish between Blue and Gary. Jus saiyan.

It seems the creatures are more popular anyway – I wasn’t even aware there was a need for standardisation.

  23. Gollywogg said,

    January 22, 2011 @ 1:29 pm

    Fair enough.

No matter if you are Ash Ketchum or the infinitely more badass Red: GARY OAK will be there.

  24. Anonymous said,

    MANGA≠ANIME

This standardization is shit. Characters in the manga have anime COUNTERPARTS but they aren’t the same character.

    a few things.
1.so what will we do about the movie Bianca?
2.you forgot about the new professor lady.
3 any others we should be aware of or was this the whole list

Good to see, this should make the job of those tagging easier. Even if the furry stuff is ten times more juicy… 😛

  27. Darkness said,

So pokémon trainer names are tagged k now bacl to r34 to see how many people read this

  28. J4mie said,

Leaf? Would prefer Blue, especially considering Adventures’ version is lumped in (neither eng or jap use Leaf in that). Otherwise, my only complaint.

  29. Injutora said,

    January 24, 2011 @ 12:42 am

Okay, there isn’t too much trouble, But naming Bel, Bianca? Let’s get honest, people! Bel is a Clearly Legible and pronounceable name in english. So Re-Naming the character is B.S. And You Frickin’ Know It.

  30. rob1610 said,

    January 24, 2011 @ 1:47 am

TwilightWolf, I honestly thought they’d just keep it and spell it as Belle, but they’ve done that instead. Oh, and Cheren keeps his japanese name.

anon, in full detail, Ash and Gary are/were originally based off the characters Red and Blue and are the only 2 main characters not to be taken directly from the game series.

What about Aero from the upcoming Megaman Legends 3? I know this isn’t Pokemon-related but there are some characters that haven’t been decided to be named yet since we had a lots of characters from upcoming games.

  32. Raika said,

    January 25, 2011 @ 6:01 pm

So what about all those nice Yellow pics? At least Red is being kept although I would have prefered if you guys kept the PokeSupe names instead. :)

  34. Anonymous said,

Yeah, wrong names, you fuckers are wrong.

  35. Rob said,

    January 28, 2011 @ 12:16 pm

Yeah uh Bianca isn’t going to work because then there’ll be two pokemon girls with the same tag.

Find something else, or keep it as Bel.

  36. anon said,

    January 29, 2011 @ 7:50 am

So… why are Blue Oak and Gary Oak tagged as the same character?

I have other gripes, like Gold should be Ethan, Marina should be Kris, and LEAF should be Green. But those are not important because they are really personal preference and can be interpreted however the individual likes.

However, having Blue and Gary as the same character is a blatant contradiction of reality.

    Trufax.

Bianca? that’s gay, I like Bel way better……. fits her look..

  38. Anonymous said,

White and Black aren’t even official names. The first is Touko and the former Touya. But we’ll need to wait until Black & White are out.

Why not tag May pictures as “May” but Sapphire pictures “May Sapphire” (for example)? Likewise, Marine pictures as “Marine” but Crystal ones “Marine Crystal”.
